I live in Devon where we are lucky to have 17 churches with 29 roof bosses of the Three Hares symbol and I have painted each one and made a trail leaflet to take you to find them. All the original paintings can be seen in my gallery Ludgate Fine Art, 20 The Square, Chagford,Dartmoor,Devon,TQ13 8AB.
The latest of my Three Hares paintings is now framed and hanging in my gallery. The poem around the heart reads:- Midnight moonlight starlight hares
Forever running joined by their ears
Your meaning is hidden lost in time
An ancient symbol of things divine
On Sat 10th Oct at 9pm BBC 2 are putting on a programme about the poet Ted Hughes, as he used to live here for a while this should be interesting and you may also get a glimpse of my painting of The Three Hares as the company who produced it have asked if they could use my painting in the programme!
This is my symbol of the three hares created for my Devon's Nature in Art website, although based on the ancient symbol this is entirely unique. I have painted the border to look as if it was made from the lichen covered granite of Dartmoor and behind the three hares I have painted four scenes depicting the seasons. Winter is the ancient granite cross on Week down. Spring is a view of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Summer is the heather clad Prestonbury Hill Fort above Fingle Bridge and Autumn is a view towards Haytor.
